With the success of its five-year plans and the constructive efforts of the government, there is a marked increase of production and rise in per capital income. There is an all-round increase in affluence and prosperity and with this affluence there is also an increase in crime and violence. What is violence against women? Violence against women and girls is ‘any act of gender-based violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women [or girls], including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life. ‘Girls and young women under the age of 18 years are further subject to violence when they suffer the ‘neglect or negligent treatment, maltreatment or exploitation ‘that is part of the broader definition of violence against children Defining Gender-Based Abuse: The Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women is the first international human rights instrument to exclusively and explicitly address the issue of violence against women.
